Thac Bac
or Silver Waterfalls

"At this fantastic place we walk further down, through the green rice fields towards a high waterfall. At the bottom of the waterfall is a village, it is a very small local village with a river and around thatched and wooden houses. In the village we see many pigs, chickens and children playing.
Me has 3 sons aged 3, 5 and 7. Her husband is now 100 kilometers away to their cardamom field with some other men. He stays there for 10 days. When I ask who passes on her children when she works, she indicates that they go to school and that the oldest will pick them up from school. She also adds that no one really cares about the children, because both parents often work. A world of difference from the life we are used to."

Thac Bac or Silver Waterfalls

About 15 km outside the town of Sapa - towards the towns of Lai Chau and Dien Bien Phu, the majestic “Silver Waterfall” is located in the village of San Xa Ho. The waterfall is right next to the national highway.
On the top of the Ham Rong mountain in the center of Sa Pa, you can see the Silvery White Waterfall on clear days and that's how the waterfall has been called by locals for ages.
On the way to the waterfall you will see the beautiful landscape of the mountains: there are old-growth forests, terraced fields on the slopes or floating clouds that obstruct the view. The landscape makes you forget the distance. The Silver Waterfall (Thac Bac) is a side stream of the Muong Hoa river, which runs about 17 km away. At the top of the waterfall is a small dam, which blocks some of the water for the domestic use of the local population. There is a path that leads up, which is difficult to go, you have a beautiful view over the landscape.

When you reach the Silver Waterfall at the bottom, you have to climb the long stone stairs. Watch out as it can be slippery on the steps. There are two separate paths, on the way up on the right. Halfway through the climb to the falls, visitors will have to cross a bridge to the left.
During the walk up, you will hear the sound of the wind, the animals and the birds, calling the tourists to Silver Waterfall. When you stand at the foot of the waterfall, in the midst of the vast mountains and forests, you will feel that you have never been this small. Then all the worries of life disappear.

xx

The waterfall is 200 meters high and cascades down. On the way down, bridges have been built to cross to the other side. Locals used to make bridges to exchange goods with other villages, but fortunately these dilapidated bridges have disappeared for better ones. Now the sturdy bridges are a challenge for the visitors.
After climbing this waterfall, visitors can see the majestic scenery of nature. Then you can descend to the base of the waterfall to enjoy the delicacies of the mountain forest, such as fried eggs, black chicken, grilled salmon or meat from a piglet (Ban Pig), ... There are a number of food and souvenir shops near.

At the foot of the waterfall is also a salmon farm and research center. The salmon, which is farmed in the middle, is farmed with water from the Silver Waterfall.
Here you can choose a salmon for the menu. Salmon often reminds Vietnamese of luxury and rare Western dishes.
In winter, the Silver Waterfall area is one of the thickest snowfall sites in Sapa. In one of the last years, there was a layer of snow more than 15 cm thick.
The most suitable time to visit Silver Waterfall is probably summer, all the intense heat is dissipated by smooth green pine forests, cool rocky mountains and rolling waterfalls. However, if you go in the dry season from April to August, you should consider visiting Silver Falls, because then the waterfall has very little water.
