Rach Gia
to Phu Quoc

"A beautiful stage, pass by traditional shipyards, where wooden ships with old-fashioned craftsmanship are built manually. The seams closed with rope and plastic (formerly pitch). Beautiful route on generally quiet roads.
But again made a movie. Rach Gia is the capital of Kien Giang province. It has a small fishing port. Rach Gia is developing very quickly. Land reclamation is in progress off the coast. I drive to a guesthouse that is fairly cheap, but it is full, it does not happen to me often. So then more luxurious hotel. Palace hotel taken for 2 nights. Tomorrow rest day."

Rach Gia

Rach Gia - is a city about 200 kilometers south of the Cambodian border. The place is located on the Gulf of Thailand at a distance of about 250 km west of Ho Chi Minh City. Rach Gia is the capital of Kien Giang province.
The center is located at the end of the Dien Bien Phu, where the market is. The city has a number of very wide boulevards for traffic. The city is not very touristy, for example, there is no beach with the necessary facilities. You will rarely encounter Westerners there.

Departure from Rach Gia

There is only one connecting road between Rach Gia and Ho Chi Minh City. This road has only 2 lanes and is of very poor quality. Halfway one has to make a crossing with a ferry. This crossing can lead to considerable delays. The condition of the roads is very poor. you pass many tens of bridges that do not connect well with the rest of the road. The total time this trip takes is therefore about 4.5 to 5 hours.
The city has a local airport from where you can fly to almost all other airports within Vietnam.

Rach Gia has a harbour where you can board the tourist island of Phu Quoc. About 90 kilometers to the northwest is the province's second largest city: Ha Tien. This town is also located on the coast. The town does have a beach and a few more tourist facilities.
Rach Gia has two bus stations. If you are coming from Ho Chi Minh City, you will likely be transferred to the main bus station, in an inconvenient location, seven kilometers southeast of the city center. If you arrive from HCMC in a Phuong Trang aka Futa bus. This bus company offers free transportation to your hotel or the pier. Every city in Vietnam can be reached by bus.
Note: Rach Gia is called Kien Giang on bus boards / timetables.

The only way to get Phu Quoc to Rach Gia or Ha Tien. The cost of getting from Ha Tien to Phu Quoc is often lower than from Rach Gia. The crossing from Rach Gia can take about 2 hours and 30 minutes. There are 3 reliable companies that offer fast ferry services to and from Phu Quoc including Ngoc Thanh, Superdong, Thanh Thoi with Superdong appearing to be the most popular option. Bicycles, luggage, etc. can be taken.
All ferries arrive at Bai Vong Pier in the fishing village of Ham Ninh, but Thanh Thoi Ferry drops passengers at Da Chong Pier in Bai Thom Municipality. At both Da Chong and Bai Vong ports, visitors can take taxis or shared minibuses to reach their destination.

The Office of Superdong

When departing from Rach Gia you must be at the pier 30 minutes before departure.
Superdong is efficient and clear. You can buy tickets from Rach Gia pier or from the Superdong office, which is just a few blocks behind the pier. You must show your passport or provide your passport number to purchase the ticket. The office is open daily from 06:00 AM to 08:30 PM. The Superdong ferry leaves at 08:00, 08:45, 13:00. Departure times may change. So check them in Rach Gia in time.
The boat is air-conditioned and quite luxurious - seats are allocated and the seats are comfortable. You get a bottle of water, wifi and a movie on flat screen TVs.
On weekends in high season and on holidays, an additional departure time can be added at 12:40 PM.

Superdong also sails on three of the Nam Du Islands - Hon Tre, Lai Son and Nam Du (Hon Son) - making a pit stop to pick up passengers and cargo before making the same trip in reverse and returning to Rach Gia.
Several companies at Rach Gia Wharf operate boats to Nam Du, mostly in the morning, and most return in the afternoon.
