Ha Tien
to Phu Quoc

"At 12 o'clock with the fast ferry to the mainland. After 1.5 hours we arrive in Ha Tien a small town. We found a small hotel on the outskirts of the city with the funny name "Happy Hotel". There is no tourism and high-rise here.
We have walked around the town and it remains a separate face with all those shops in which people also live. Ha Tien is known for its crabs, so we ate it again. Tomorrow we will cross the border to Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia."

Ha Tien

Ha Tien - is near the border with Cambodia. It was founded by a Chinese immigrant in 1674. The harbor town put itself on the map, thanks to its good position along the Gulf of Thailand. This made it an important link in the trade between India and China. For years it was a quiet, sleepy town, but now it is busy with Western travelers The reason for the increasing tourism is:
a) You can leave from the harbour the islands of Phu Quoc , Nam Du and Hai Tac.
b) The border with Cambodia is open and you can take a motorcycle taxi directly to Sihanoukville and Kep.

There is also an option to sail from Rach Gia to Phu Quoc. Rach Gia is more difficult to reach than Ha Tien and the crossing takes longer (150 minutes) and is slightly more expensive. The places are about 100 km apart.

Departure Ha Tien

As you approach the town of Ha Tien, you will see that the Giang Thanh River forms a lagoon surrounded by a dense mangrove forest, before it enters the river. Next to the lagoon is a Buddhist Ngoc Tien Monastery. The buildings themselves are unremarkable, but it's worth the steep climb for the views of the city, countryside, and lagoon. You can travel to Ha Tien from various places. From Ho Chi Minh City you can travel by night bus and day bus to Ha Tien. From Can Tho and Chau Doc you can travel to the port by minibus or the big bus.

The bus station is west of the city center across the bridge, which is only for cars / bikes. NO ATMS can be found at the bus station. Nearest ATMS are located in the city center only. There are also few restaurants at the bus station.
The city center is easily reached on foot with Tran Hau. This is the main commercial street that runs along the coast. The central market (fish, meat and fruit market) and the fish market (Cho Ca) are located next to each other on the river in the center of the city.
Here are also the restaurants, which serve delicious seafood. Due to its location by the sea, this means fresh fish and other seafood. There is also a large new covered market for clothes and household goods. In the evening there is a night market in the same area as the daytime food markets.

Several small hidden Chinese temples can be found all over the city. Often in small back streets, where you will also find old colonial buildings. The tombs of the Mac Cuu family lie on a sprawling hill at the end of Mac Cuu Street. On the border with Cambodia (actually in Cambodia) there are 3 casinos - only one big, the other smaller gambling halls with mainly Chinese games.

Outside the city you will find a cave with the Thac Dong Pagoda and the road south of Ha Tien runs past green mountains, rice fields with water buffaloes , Moso & Crocodile Caves, beautiful beaches, Pagoda Cave and Hon Chong Bay (similar to a miniature version of Halong Bay).

The port of Ha Tien, from where the ferries to Phu Quoc and Hai Tac depart is conveniently located next to the bridge. The road leads you to the center of Ha Tien. Boat tickets are available at the ticket offices of the ferry companies (Superdong Fast Ferry and Phu Quoc Express). Boats to Phu Quoc depart at 7:30 AM, 8:00 AM, and 1:15 PM. Check in advance that departure times have not changed.
The boats to Phu Quoc are modern boats of good quality. The have air conditioning, wifi and TV on board. You are on the road for over 80 minutes and pay about € 12 for a ticket. The boats depart from Ha Tien and arrive on the island at the port of Bai Vong. Please note that the prices mentioned may be changed.

The border of Cambodja crossing is very easy as you can get a 30 day tourist visa on site for approx. $ 30. However, the visa officer will ask you for $ 35. Once you insist on paying the actual fee, you may even experience a few hours delay at the border crossing without stating reasons. If you can bear the wait, you can try to get the lower rate. The health officer next door will also ask you for a USD $ 1 fee, but if you keep saying that you know there is no fee, he will relapse. If you have your personal vaccination document with you, you can show it there and avoid extra payment.
