Binh Thuy Ancient House

"Binh Thuy Communal house is one of the must visit when you're in Can Tho even though it's located on the outskirts of town.
For fans of culture and architect, Binh Thuy Communal House gives you glimpse into what an estate of a mandarin would look like back in the French colonial days.
I just wish the property has more professional maintenance as it's definitely a treasure. The whole property is not that big and you'll spent about 30 minutes to an hour going through it.
Along with floating market, this is one of the places in Can Tho worth paying a visit.
HINT: If you're lucky and the great grand daughter of the house builder is on premise, you can ask her to give you mini-tour of the house."

Binh Thuy Ancient House

Binh Thuy Ancient House - is an old house, which is an ideal place to discover the history of the region around Can Tho. It is about 5 kilometers from the city center in the district of Binh Thuy. The house is filled with features, representing the country in the Mekong Delta region in the 20th century.

The house was built in1870 in a French style by the family Duong, who moved to this region in the 18th century. It was finished in 1911. The house has an area of nearly 6,000 square meters. The house is about one meter above the land surface. The interior has beautiful old wooden furniture, such as beds and a large ancestral altar. It also has many valuable antiques, including marble tables, low beds, chandeliers, massive sideboards, a porcelain sink. It is alleged that some antiques are 500 years old.

To keep the house warm and to prevent termites from coming into the house, the homeowner squirted a 10 cm thick layer of salt under the floorboards. Beautiful, curved staircases lead to five doors with green shutters. The middle doors have beautiful arches, the outer have triangles.
The front of the house is in European-style and was used as a living room.
The middle section is to worship the ancestors and features altars and images. A wooden screen, which is intricately decorated with animals and vegetables, separates the front with the middle section.
The rear part of the house is also used as living space, such families still do, if they live together with several families. Shutters can be put open to let in the sunlight. This area is not accessible to visitors.

Het interieur

With front- and backyard gardens, the house offers a comfortable home filled with fresh air with a shining sun. The house is now managed by Duong Minh Hien, the sixth generation of the Duong family.
The interior consists of three parts. The front (European-style) was used as a living room. Beautiful colonial tiles at the entrance to welcome the guests.

The house has an beautiful orchid garden with various species, Hien pampers with great care. His father, Duong Van Ngon, designed this orchid garden landscaped with lots of time and effort.
This house is so special, because in this region are only very few old houses, which are so well maintained. It is an excellent example of a house with western and eastern elements.
Binh Thuy Ancient House has been used in many films such as "The silt ways", "The Bac Lieu mandarin's son" and "The Lover" by French director J. Annaud.
